The double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra.  The double bass typically has four strings however it is the only modern bowed string instrument that is tuned in fourths rather than fifths. It is commonly played by drawing a bow across its strings although it can also be played by plucking the strings.
